What Operational Technology Cybersecurity Means for Small Industrial Sites

For small industrial sites, the idea of “cybersecurity” often sounds like enterprise SOC teams, expensive tools, and 24/7 monitoring. The reality is simpler: most incidents start with basic network hygiene, not advanced nation-state attacks.

Start with separation

The first control is segregation. Keep OT control networks off the corporate Wi-Fi. Put them behind a firewall. Limit remote access to jump hosts with MFA. This alone removes a large share of common attack paths.

Know what you have

An asset inventory sounds boring until you need to patch something fast. Document PLCs, RTUs, HMIs, network switches, and any remote-access gateways. Include firmware versions and network addresses.

Use standards as a scaffold

ISA/IEC 62443 gives you a vocabulary and a structure, not a mandate to boil the ocean. Pick the parts relevant to your site size and risk profile, then build from there.

S5 Consultants helps small industrial operators assess OT security, design segmented architectures, and put practical controls in place without slowing operations. Contact us for an OT security review.
